Wonders of Science Thanks to a generous donation from Dorchester Middle School, we have been able to deliver a large quantity of science equipment to the Dr Ram Lakhan Memorial Primary School. The school previously had very little in the way of science resources and so much of the teaching had to be theory, rather than practical. Now the children can have hands-on experience. It is also hoped that some of the children will start to correspond with each other, thus forming an even greater bond between the two schools and giving the chance to learn about different cultures.
Musical Instruments
The Surya Baal Ramayan Mandali, a Hindi
youth group near Suva, is now enjoying being able to play
traditional Indian instruments at their meetings and giving
performances outside the group. The young boys are mostly from
underprivileged backgrounds and these activities help to give them a
sense of purpose and pride.

Sunny Smiles Last month we had the honour of attending the official opening of our third kindergarten. It took place at Narikoso, a coastal village on the small island of Ono (off Kadavu). There were traditional celebrations involving the ceremonial drinking of kava, the presentation of woven mats by the women of the village, dancing by the children and adults, feasting, the cutting of the ribbon ... and (highest of all honours) the presentation of a tabua or whale’s tooth to us! The ceremony was held about 100 metres from the sea and afterwards we travelled by small boat on the ocean to the island’s main wharf, only to discover that all that time Fiji had been on a ‘high risk category’ tsunami alert. As the village had no electricity or mobile reception, we were all oblivious to the potential danger we had been in.

Sunday Best We took 200 brightly coloured customised T-shirts for the children at Raiwai Sunday School, in one of the poorer areas of Suva. The children were delighted and wear their new outfits with such pride!
Waibunabuna
We visited Waibunabuna Primary School on the island of Vanua Levu, where our third sanitation project is almost complete. The 35 children (soon set to increase to 50) who board at the school only have one pit toilet and one bucket shower that gives them no privacy. The new facilities will provide proper flush toilets, washbasins and showers. The children have dormitories, but have to sleep on the floor. We plan to provide bunk beds for them.

Future Projects: · To provide cooking/dining facilities for Uluinakorovatu Primary School at Naceva on Beqa Island, where many children walk for miles to reach school, often leaving home with no breakfast and inadequate provisions for lunch. · To provide bunk beds for the children who board at Waibunabuna Primary School. · To provide essential resources for Bouma Nursing Station on Taveuni, so that babies in that area can be monitored and given basic medical treatment instead of having to travel over 2 hours on a bus to the island’s only hospital. · To provide a study area for the students of Nausori High School.
